Volcanic plumbing filters on ocean-island basalt geochemistry

چکیده

Abstract Ocean-island basalts (OIBs) are considered to be messengers from the deep mantle, yet filtering effect of plumbing systems that bring OIB melts surface remains poorly assessed. We investigated volcanic products El Hierro island (Canary Islands) textural and chemical perspectives. The majority geochemical data cluster at relatively fractionated basaltic compositions 5 wt% MgO. Compositions ≥10 MgO porphyritic whole rocks accumulate mafic minerals. Near-primary do not erupt. Instead, we show carrier (crystal-free rocks, glasses, melt inclusions) consistently buffered low-MgO during passage through system. tested our model fractionation crystal accumulation on a global compilation OIBs. Similar Hierro, evolved (alkaline) 7 (tholeiitic). Modeling parental melts, with 50% crystallization, reach reduced density, increased volatile content, overall low viscosity, becoming positively buoyant relative wall highly eruptible when reaching saturation depths around crust-mantle boundary. Under these conditions, “sweet spot” propelled erupt carrying an assortment recycled crystals. This mechanism is consistent petrography chemistry erupted suggests volcanoes dominated by melts.

Length scales of mantle heterogeneities and their relationship to ocean island basalt geochemistry

The upper mantle is widely considered to be heterogeneous, possibly comprising a “marble-cake” mixture of heterogeneous domains in a relatively well-mixed matrix. The extent to which such domains are capable of producing and expelling melts with characteristic geochemical signatures upon partial melting, rather than equilibrating diffusively with surrounding peridotite, is a critical question f...

Geochemistry of the Cenozoic Volcanic Rocks of Ross Island and Vicinity, Antarctica

The Cenozoic volcanic rocks of Ross Island and vicinity, Antarctica, are surface flows, tuffs, breccias, and small intrusives. The prominent rock is basanitoid. Alkali-basalt magma reached the surface over an appreciable length of time and was differentiated to produce a rock series: basanitoid -. trachybasalt -, phonolite. The alkalic, silica-undersaturated rocks are part of a larger petrologi...

Studying Volcanic Plumbing Systems – Multidisciplinary Approaches to a Multifaceted Problem

Magma transport and storage beneath active volcanoes occurs in the so-called volcanic plumbing system (VPS), a network of different magmatic sheet intrusions and magma reservoirs. The complex physical and chemical processes, which occur in the volcanic plumbing system, are key parameters that control the occurrence of an eruption, as well as type and size of the eruption. It is therefore impera...

Dendrochronology and Geochemistry of Long Island Trees

To help understand the effect of short term climatic changes on ring width variations of trees on Long Island, time series were performed on 6 Liriondendrin tuliperfera (tulip poplars) and 1 white oak from Caumsett State Park, and 6 Pinus rigidas (pitch pines) from Sears Bellows and Hubbard County Parks. Prolonged drought periods on Long Island occur during years 1927-1932, 1960-1970 and 1980-1...
